LG said to be building next–gen Google smartphone

Google’s forthcoming Pixel XL 2 will be built by LG, according to eagle–eyed tech watchers who found reference to the company in a bug entry listed earlier this year.

The device, believed to be codenamed ‘taimen’, was mentioned by an LG employee when notifying Google of an issue with the device via its Android Issue Tracker.

News of LG’s involvement comes just a day after it was claimed Google will only release two Pixel smartphones this year.

The company was thought to be priming a third, larger model, dubbed ‘muskie’, but insiders say it is now training its focus on a pair of new handsets for launch later this year.

LG has previously worked with Google on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5X. Last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL were built by HTC on behalf of Google.

It’s not yet clear whether LG will be developing the Pixel 2, or if another manufacturer is being brought on board.

Little is known about the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, although rumours suggest the phones could feature an edge–to–edge screen and no headphone slot.
